Stop the Insanity! Start Creating your Fitness Mindset
How many fitness programs have you started in the hope to lose weight and get in shape, but find 2 weeks later you’re losing all motivation to continue?
How many times have you tried to lose weight on a program that has promised to drop those pounds off effortlessly only to find that it’s too good to be true you and you put the weight (and probably a few extra pounds) back on?
Although your intentions are all well and good, the major component missing from your efforts is the development of a “fitness mindset”.
A fitness mindset is the number one key to achieving your weight loss and fitness goals, it’s what gets you back on track after setbacks and failures.
Keys to Developing a Fitness Mindset
1. How you got here
In order to develop a fitness mindset one of the first things you have to come to grasps with is your current physical condition, is the result of everyday actions performed throughout your life.
2. Manage Expectations
You can’t have the expectation that all those years of becoming overweight and out of shape can’t be undone in a couple of months. There is no such thing as instantaneous fitness. The fitness mindset sees your life as a journey rather than a destination
3. Change has to be balanced (meaning they can’t be severely restricting or extreme).
The exercise and nutrition routine has to be compatible with your lifestyle, remember this all about living a healthy active lifestyle not a quick fix.
It’s all about small changes over time
The number one reason people fail to follow a plan is that they make too many changes at once. Instead of completely overhauling your entire diet and trying exercise every day, try only making a few small changes. Taking baby steps is the key to long-term and lasting results
4. Acknowledge where you are at currently
QUIT MAKING EXCUSES!
You have to take responsible or your physical condition. You have to stop playing the victim – allowing other people and circumstances to control your life.
5. The Power of Why!
If you why isn’t strong enough, you most likely fail at the first obstacle that comes your way. There are two major types of motivation.
Intrinsic motivations come from inside and they are based on personal satisfaction, rather than satisfying others.
Extrinsic motivations require validation by others or have an external reward. Examples of extrinsic motivations are things like wanting the approval or admiration of others
Extrinsic motivations will only motivate you in the short term.
Here are 4 questions to ask yourself when defining your ‘WHY”
- Why do I really want to lose weight?
- Why is losing weight really desirable to me? (how will it improve my life)
- How will it help the people I care about?
- What could happen if I don’t change my health
6. You need to create a Vision for yourself
Picture in your mind what you will look like, and how your life will be better when you have achieved your goals.
Squash the doubt in yourself and ignore the doubt of others.
You will find those closest to you will be doubters because when you decide to do the right things for your health you become a mirror on them. You will be reflecting all their bad habits right back at them.
This is the last and most difficult thing you MUST do. Your greatest enemy of your success is you.
7. Most importantly enjoy the journey
A fitness mindset is all about the journey. Looking and feeling great is a great reward, but the better person you become is the most important. The journey will answer the question of “What are you truly capable of.” You begin to appreciate your small successes and to look at your obstacles and mistakes as opportunities for personal growth.
